Things to do in West Cumbria

Spectacular and stunning countryside, mountains, lakes and scenery are all but a 10-15 minute drive from the Washington Central Hotel. Whether it is the rugged and unspoilt Western Lakes, the picturesque beauty spots of Keswick, Grasmere and Windermere, the costal Solway Firth or nearby Scotland, there are countless attractions for everybody.

Workington is an ancient market and industrial town at the mouth of the River Derwent, and is the main shopping centre for west Cumbria. Some parts of the town north of the River Derwent date back to Roman times. It was in the 18th century, with the exploitation of the local iron ore and coal pits, that Workington expanded to become a major industrial town and port.
Workington has a railway station on the Cumbrian coast line, from Barrow-in-Furness to Carlisle.

One start of the Sea to Sea cycle route is at Workington. (The other is at Whitehaven).

We pride ourselves on tailoring the weekend to the requirements of each individual, whether they be walkers, climbers, cyclists, anglers, golfers or those guests just looking for the leisurely relaxing weekend.
